UN Deputy Envoy says devastating wildfires sweep through Syria’s Latakia

LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – Najat Rochdi, Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, stated on Monday that Syria’s Latakia Governorate is currently experiencing devastating wildfires.

In a post on X, Rochdi said, “The wildfires in Latakia are devastating — dozens of villages affected, crops destroyed, families displaced, livelihoods gone.”

She noted that U.N. teams are on the ground conducting needs assessments and reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to scale up support in coordination with local authorities.

“UN teams are on the ground assessing needs & ready to scale up support for people in coordination with the authorities,” she added.

Rochdi expressed her appreciation for the bravery of firefighting teams, the solidarity shown by neighboring countries, and the tireless efforts of Syrian citizens and local communities working to assist those affected.
