Hospital in Deir ez-Zor struggles to stay open after loss of funding
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The director of a hospital in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, told North Press on Wednesday that the medical staff is facing mounting challenges following the suspension of support from a humanitarian organization operating in the area.
Jassem al-Rayash, director of al-Kasrah Hospital, said the facility is grappling with a severe funding shortfall after the donor organization halted its financial assistance, leading to the depletion of the hospital’s allocated budget.
He told North Press that in response, both medical and administrative staff have chosen to continue working voluntarily to ensure uninterrupted access to essential healthcare services for local residents.
Al-Rayash added that the organization previously funding the hospital is currently seeking alternative sources of financial support.
Despite the setback, he emphasized that treatment services will continue and the hospital will remain operational throughout the month, thanks to the dedication of volunteer staff and pending the identification of new funding avenues.
He also noted that the Deir ez-Zor Health Committee is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with the hospital administration to devise a sustainable operational plan aimed at resolving the crisis and maintaining the hospital’s critical role in the region.
