Wheat reserves secure food supply in NE Syria for two years – AANES
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – A senior official from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) told North Press on Sunday that the region had received 254,000 tons of wheat as of June 27.
The official confirmed that “there is no threat to food security in North and East Syria region.”
Jwan Hassan, co-chair of the Grain Silos and Mills Committee within the AANES, stated that the newly collected wheat, along with reserves from previous harvests, is sufficient to meet the region’s wheat needs for at least the next two years.
“Our food security remains intact,” Hassan affirmed.
He added that the committee’s strategic plan is focused on supporting farmers through all available means.
The plan, according to Hassan, includes supplying diesel fuel according to the new agricultural plan, distributing wheat seeds and organic fertilizers for irrigated crops, and providing seeds and fertilizers for regulated rain-fed crops at 50 percent of the cost.
For the 2024–2025 season, the AANES has set the purchase price of wheat at $0.42 per kilogram.
Earlier this year, another official from the AANES told North Press they expected wheat production in North and East Syria region alone to reach approximately 150,000 tons in 2024.
However, this year’s farming season faced significant challenges due to poor rainfall. Farmers report that rain-fed crops were completely lost, while irrigated crops were severely affected, leading to lower overall production.
