AANES urges government to maintain coordination for return of Hawl IDPs

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – An official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said on Tuesday that they urged the visiting Syrian transitional government delegation to maintain coordination on the return of displaced Syrians to their original areas of residence.

Sheikhmus Ahmad, co-chair of the Displaced Persons and Refugees Office of the AANES, told North Press, “We requested that the return process from Hawl Camp be conducted under the supervision of UNHCR to ensure a safe, voluntary, and organized return.”

On May 24, a delegation of the Syrian transitional government, accompanied by representatives of the U.S.-led Global Coalition, visited the camp in eastern Hasakah to assess the situation of Syrians residing there and explore options for their return.

Ahmad noted that current discussions are centered on establishing a joint mechanism for the return process, and the delegation’s visit aimed to gather information about the number and conditions of camp residents.

He added that the AANES has not received any formal demands from Damascus, and the initiative for enhanced coordination originated solely from the AANES itself, with no preconditions from any side.

Ahmad stressed the importance of close coordination between the Syrian transitional government, the AANES, and humanitarian organizations to ensure the sustainable reintegration of returnees, support their resettlement, and prevent future instability.
