Lebanon stresses importance of strong ties with Syria, regional cooperation

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Monday Lebanon’s commitment to fostering the best possible relations with Syria, highlighting the need for continued coordination and cooperation between the two neighboring countries to address shared challenges.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President Aoun stressed Lebanon’s eagerness to engage with Damascus, particularly concerning the issue of Syrian displaced persons and the need to ensure their safe and dignified return.

He also voiced Lebanon’s support for all efforts aimed at preserving Syria’s unity and sovereignty, and for meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Aoun welcomed the recent decision to lift sanctions on Syria, expressing hope that the move would contribute to Syria’s recovery and the region’s broader stability.

The remarks come amid renewed calls from both Lebanon and Egypt for closer regional coordination—particularly on cross-border issues such as smuggling and the Syrian refugee crisis, which remain key priorities for both governments.
