Druze leader names sanctions relief “new liberation” for Syria
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, welcomed on Thursday the recent announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the cessation of American sanctions on Syria describing it as a “new liberation” for Syria.
In a statement, al-Hajri described the move as “a new liberation from the international burdens and consequences of the former regime.”
Al-Hijri expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the decision, singling out Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his role in the diplomatic breakthrough.
“We extend our thanks to everyone who contributed to the lifting of these sanctions,” he stated. “Every victory for the homeland is a victory for the rights of us all. The lifting of sanctions is a rightful step for Syria and its innocent people.”
Beyond political commentary, the Druze leader used the opportunity to call for internal reform and national reconciliation. “We hope that along this path, we will also lift the unjust violations committed against one another,” he said, urging an end to mutual accusations of treason and religious excommunication.
“Let us show mercy to one another before we ask for mercy from others,” he emphasized.
Al-Hajri concluded his message with a hopeful vision for Syria’s future, expressing his desire that the economic relief will positively impact all Syrians and help the country heal from years of conflict and hardship.
“We hope this economic breakthrough will bring prosperity to the Syrian people, allowing them to rebuild and recover, free from exclusion and marginalization,” he said.
“May we all live as partners in victory under the roof of a unified, civil Syria—one that embraces all its ethnicities, sects, races, and colors.”
