Trump makes key demands in historic meeting with Syrian President

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. President Donald Trump presented on Wednesday Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa with a series of urgent requests aimed at advancing regional stability and U.S. security interests, according to a statement from the White House.

Karoline Leavitt, Assistant to the President and White House Press Secretary, said that Trump called on the Syrian leader to expel Palestinian factions that the United States designates as terrorist organizations.

He also urged Syria to cooperate with the United States in preventing the resurgence of ISIS across the region.

In a statement via her X platform, Leavitt added that the U.S. president encouraged Syria to join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel—a move that would significantly alter the region’s diplomatic landscape.

Another major request from Trump was for the Syrian government to assume full responsibility for ISIS detention centers located in northeast Syria, where thousands of fighters and their families remain held.

In response, the White House reported that al-Sharaa extended an invitation to U.S. companies to invest in Syria’s oil and gas sectors, signaling a potential opening for future economic cooperation.

The meeting reflects a tentative shift in U.S.-Syria engagement and may signal the beginning of a broader conversation on normalization, counterterrorism, and post-conflict reconstruction.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump met with al-Sharaa in Riyadh with the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, marking the first meeting between the leaders of the two nations in over 25 years.
