Halting sanctions aims to give Syrians chance for peace – U.S. official
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A U.S. State Department official said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend sanctions on Syria is intended “to give Syrians a chance at greatness.”
The official told North Press that easing sanctions is part of a broader effort to support stability and encourage Syria to take steps toward a peaceful resolution of its crisis.
On Tuesday, President Trump announced in Riyadh that the United States would suspend sanctions on Syria, offering what he called a new opportunity for the Syrian transitional government.
According to the official, the United States has already taken “the first steps in restoring normal relations and is meeting with the interim authorities.”
The Syrian presidency welcomed Trump’s decision, describing it as a positive step toward improving relations and alleviating the humanitarian impact of the sanctions.
