Syria to top agenda in Trump’s visit to Gulf States – U.S. politician

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia is “historic and pivotal” with Syria topping the agenda, Hazem Alghabra, a politician and former advisor at the U.S. State Department told North Press on Tuesday.

Alghabra added that President Trump is keen to address longstanding issues in the region, most notably the war in Gaza. The Syrian file will also take center stage, with discussions likely to include the potential for a partial easing of sanctions, depending on the Syrian government’s response.

Trump’s trip to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday marks his first foreign visit since announcing victory in his bid for a second presidential term. The tour will also include Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

He added that the importance of this visit also lies in the influential roles of these three countries. Trump is visiting some of the wealthiest nations in the world—countries that are deeply invested in promoting regional stability.

Alghabra highlighted that Turkey remains a key player in the Syrian file, alongside Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.

There is a collective push for stability in Syria. No party benefits from continued chaos or a state collapse in Syria. A deteriorating Syrian economy would have profoundly negative repercussions for the region, he said.

The former advisor also confirmed that the Iranian nuclear issue will be part of the discussions during Trump’s meetings in the Gulf states.

He concluded by noting that the visit is expected to feature the announcement of major arms and trade agreements, particularly in sectors such as technology and artificial intelligence.
