DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid stated on Saturday that the presence of U.S. forces along the Syrian-Iraqi border remains crucial in the ongoing fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
In an interview with Al-Arabiya Al-Hadath, President Rashid also voiced concern about certain armed groups operating along the shared border with Syria. He stressed the importance of continued dialogue between the two countries to address these security challenges.
Rashid firmly rejected any external interference in Syria’s internal affairs, emphasizing that preserving Syria’s sovereignty is essential. Syria’s security is closely tied to Iraq’s security, particularly given the length of the shared border, he added.
Earlier last week, Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari noted that no formal security coordination currently exists between the Iraqi and Syrian interior ministries.
Regarding Syria’s potential role in the upcoming Arab Summit scheduled for May 17, President Rashid said that that decision lies with the Syrian leadership.
He added that Syria remains a neighboring, friendly, and strategically important country for both Iraq and the broader region, expressing hope that the Syrian people will soon enjoy lasting peace and stability.
President Rashid also welcomed recent developments in Syria, stating that they hope the new government ensures inclusive political participation, representing all ethnicities, communities, and components, while upholding the rights of all citizens.
