Iraqi Interior Minister confirms no security coordination with Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari stated on Tuesday that there is currently no security coordination between Iraq’s Ministry of Interior and its Syrian counterpart.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, al-Shammari confirmed that the border crossings with Syria remain closed, noting that parts of the Syrian border are under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), rather than the Syrian government.
Iraq shares five official border crossings with Syria: al-Tanf, Abu Kamal, al-Ya’rubiyah, al-Walid, and Semalka crossings.
The status of these crossings has remained uncertain due to ongoing security and political challenges along the border.
In a separate comment, Al-Shammari said that no formal request had been received to coordinate the security arrangements for a potential visit by Syrian Transitional President, Ahmad al-Sharaa, to Baghdad for the upcoming Arab League Summit scheduled for May.
