Germany reinstates Syrian asylum hearings

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) announced on Sunday that Syrian asylum seekers are once again permitted to present the reasons for their asylum claims, effective from the beginning of May.

In a statement, the office clarified that while it will now resume hearings to collect applicants’ personal statements and reasons for seeking protection, the suspension of final decisions remains in place.

This announcement means no asylum approvals or rejections will be issued for the time being.

The statement pointed out that procedures will continue to be limited to the collection of information only, indicating that the asylum process for Syrians remains in a holding pattern pending further review.

Late in 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime, the BAMF had suspended the processing of asylum applications submitted by Syrians, citing the unclear and evolving situation in Syria. The agency is expected to reassess this suspension no later than early June.
