Vatican delegation praises religious freedom in AANES’ region

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A delegation from the Vatican visited on Sunday the Department of Foreign Relations of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Qamishli, northeastern Syria.

Gulistan Ali, Deputy Co-Chair of the Department of Foreign Relations, said that the Vatican delegation welcomed the AANES’ efforts to engage with all religious sects and communities.

Ali told North Press that the meeting included a discussion of the AANES’s Social Contract, particularly its provisions on freedom of religion and belief, and the mechanisms in place to ensure the protection of minority rights.

The delegation included Syrian national Brother Terez Elias Kanakri, Nadia Amin Khalil from Egypt, and Marie Habib Kerouz from Lebanon—members of the Marian Franciscan Order.
