Violence continues in Syria’s Suwayda as armed groups attack village   

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Local sources reported on Thursday that armed clashes are ongoing near the village of Kanaker in Suwayda western countryside, southern Syria, as local factions engage in battles with unidentified armed groups.

According to Suwayda 24, a local news website, local sources confirmed that “local factions successfully repelled an assault by armed groups on the village of Kanaker in the west of Suwayda and managed to push them back.”

The sources added that sporadic gunfire can still be heard in the area, attributed to ongoing clearing operations.

The fighting remains active around Kanaker, with armed groups reportedly targeting the village using mortars and heavy weaponry, while local forces are attempting to defend the area.

In a related development, Rif Dimashq Governor Ammar al-Sheikh, during a press conference attended by North Press on Wednesday evening, commented on the recent unrest in Jaramana and Sahnaya in the south Damascus. He emphasized, “Weapons must be exclusively in the hands of the state to preserve civil peace.”

On Wednesday, two towns in northern and southern countryside of Suwayda came under attack with mortar shells and heavy machine gunfire. The shelling resulted in the injury of one civilian and caused material damage.
