Protesters in Suwayda condemn violence in Damascus

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of residents gathered on Wednesday in al-Karama Square in the city of Suwayda, southern Syria, to protest the recent violence and armed clashes in Damascus countryside.

Local sources told North Press that demonstrators condemned the attacks on Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, two Druze-majority towns in the Damascus countryside, holding the Syrian government responsible for the escalating security threats and demanding an immediate halt to the violence, warning of its dangerous implications for civil peace and social cohesion.

Protesters carried banners rejecting bloodshed and called on the Mufti of the Republic to issue a clear religious stance condemning the killing of Syrians, in an effort to de-escalate tensions following the circulation of an audio recording that contained offensive remarks about the Prophet Muhammad.

The protesters also expressed strong rejection of any insult to religious figures, emphasizing that such actions reflect only the individuals who commit them and do not represent any segment of Syrian society.

The protest comes amid heightened fears of sectarian strife and broader instability in southern Syria, as local communities continue to grapple with violence and the breakdown of law and order.
