Druze delegation from Suwayda heads to Damascus to ease tensions
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Local sources told North Press on Wednesday that a delegation of Druze sheikhs and community leaders from Suwayda is preparing to travel to the town of Sahnaya, south of Damascus, as part of a grassroots initiative aimed at de-escalating violence and addressing the growing security threats facing Druze residents in the area.
The sources said that the move by the Suwayda delegation was prompted by recent attacks carried out by armed factions that reportedly targeted members of the Druze community, raising fears of further escalation and sectarian unrest.
The initiative seeks to re-establish calm on the ground and engage with local actors in Sahnaya town to coordinate efforts aimed at confronting the present danger while preempting attempts to sow division or ignite local conflict, the sources explained.
According to the same sources, the delegation will deliver a firm message rejecting any assault on civilians or social groups under any pretext, reaffirming the shared destiny and solidarity between neighboring communities in the face of mutual threats.
The delegation is expected to hold a series of meetings with local notables and community leaders in Sahnaya in the coming hours to promote dialogue and national unity.
Earlier in the day, Syria’s Ministry of Health confirmed that the death toll from ongoing clashes in Ashrafiyat Sahnaya had risen to 11, amid intense fighting between security forces and armed groups labeled by state media as “outlaws.”
