Sectarian armed clashes in southern Damascus leave 17 casualties
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Sectarian armed clashes that erupted in the early hours of Tuesday in the southern countryside of Damascus, Syria’s capital, led to 17 casualties.
According to Suwayda 24, a local news website, an armed group attacked residential neighborhoods in the Druze-majority city of Jaramana in the south of Damascus.
The attack led to the killing of five people and the injury of 12 others, all of them are from the Druze community, according to North Press correspondent.
The Suwayda 24 reported that Jaramana came under heavy gunfire from armed groups that had gathered at various positions surrounding the city.
Citing multiple local sources, the website noted that the clashes began with an attack on residential neighborhoods using light and medium weapons.
This incident comes amid rising sectarian tensions in the region. Just two days earlier, university dormitories in the cities of Homs and Damascus witnessed unrest after an audio recording containing sectarian slurs was circulated. The recording sparked a series of assaults targeting students from Suwayda, a Druze governorate in southern Syria.
