UN envoy says partial easing of sanctions on Syria positive step but not enough
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, Najat Rochdi, told North Press on Saturday that while the partial lifting of European sanctions on certain vital sectors represents a significant initial step, it remains insufficient to meet the needs of the Syrian people.
“We are encouraged by the European group’s decision to partially ease sanctions on some sensitive and important sectors for the Syrian population, Rochdi said during an open dialogue session held in Damascus. “This is a very important first step, but it is not enough.”
Speaking at the event organized by the “Ta’ Mabsoota” Foundation, Rochdi emphasized that “there is a general consensus that Syria’s recovery requires the lifting of sanctions.”
She noted that while the European measures are welcome, “the American sanctions remain in place,” continuing to pose major challenges to Syria’s path to recovery.
She revealed that discussions have been held between Syrian authorities and representatives of the countries that have imposed sanctions, signaling ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“As the Office of the Special Envoy, we are actively engaged in this area,” she added.
Rochdi stressed that the UN Special Envoy to Syria had reiterated before the UN Security Council last Friday the urgent need to give Syrian authorities and the Syrian people a genuine opportunity to achieve societal, economic, and security recovery.
