Barzani receives Abdi in Erbil to discuss Kurdish unity, regional stability

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced on Thursday that President Nechirvan Barzani met with General Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in Erbil on Wednesday evening.

According to an official statement, the meeting focused on the latest developments in Syria, including the relationship between the SDF, Syrian Kurdish political parties, and the Syrian transitional government.

Both Barzani and Abdi emphasized the importance of inclusive governance in Syria, highlighting the need for the Kurds and all Syrian communities to play a meaningful role in the country’s political future.

The two leaders also underscored the critical need for unity and reconciliation among Syrian Kurdish parties as a foundation for securing the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people.

Additional topics discussed included the humanitarian and security situation at Hawl Camp and the ongoing role of the Global Coalition in the fight against ISIS.

The meeting also included Ilham Ahmad, Co-Chair of Foreign Relations Department for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), and Hamid Darbandi, Head of the Public Relations Department in the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region.

The meeting followed a separate high-level discussion on the same day between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, General Abdi, and Ilham Ahmad, Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
