HAMA, Syria (North Press) – A child was killed on Tuesday after a landmine exploded while he was herding sheep in the northern countryside of Hama, northwestern Syria.
A local source told North Press that the mine explosion occurred in the Umm Jalal area in the town of al-Tamanah, and resulted in the death of Hamad Hassan al-Aloush, who succumbed to critical injuries sustained in the blast.
On April 19, one person was killed and two others suffered severe amputations following the detonation of unexploded ordnance at a scrap collection center near the city of Maarat Misrin, north of Idlib.
They added that the area is heavily contaminated with unexploded war remnants, posing a serious threat to residents—especially children and shepherds who frequently roam open fields.
In a related incident, a similar explosion took place in the town of al-Huwaiz, located in the al-Ghab Plain in western Hama countryside. The blast killed eight sheep, though no human casualties were reported.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has stated that while mine clearance efforts are ongoing in certain parts of Syria; weapons contamination continues to threaten the lives of millions across the country.
