OPCW says over 100 suspected chemical weapons sites remain in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) revealed on Sunday that over 100 chemical weapons sites may still exist across Syria, with some believed to be deliberately concealed.
According to the international watchdog, a number of these sites date back to the era of the Assad regime and may be hidden in caves or remote locations that are difficult to detect or access.
The OPCW stated that remaining stockpiles could include dangerous substances such as sarin gas, chlorine gas, and mustard gas.
The organization also noted that the current Syrian government has granted permission for an inspection team to enter the country this year to begin documenting and verifying the suspected sites.
This latest disclosure underscores ongoing concerns about chemical weapons proliferation and accountability more than a decade after Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention.
