EU top diplomat warns Israeli attacks on Syria risk further escalation
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned on Monday evening that Israeli strikes on Syria and Lebanon signal a potential escalation in the region.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Kallas emphasized that military actions must be proportionate, adding that Israel’s recent strikes could further destabilize the situation.
She stated that these attacks “are unnecessary actions because Syria is not attacking Israel, and this will only fuel radicalization.”
Kallas also questioned Syria’s new leadership, noting they are saying the right things, but the real question is whether they will follow through with action.
Despite a ceasefire along the Lebanese border, Israel has continued its operations, citing efforts to target Hezbollah leaders and military infrastructure.
Since the collapse of the Syrian regime in December 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on military sites across Syria.
