Druze leader in Suwayda calls for ceasefire in Syria’s coastal region

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, leader of the Druze community in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, called on Saturday for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the fighting in Syria’s coastal region.

In a statement, al-Hajri urged local, international, and U.N. bodies to intervene swiftly to halt the bloodshed and restore peace.

Since Thursday, intense clashes have been ongoing between the Syrian General Security Forces and armed groups accused of ties to the former Syrian regime, resulting in dozens of deaths, injuries, and captures, including civilians.

“The Syrian coast is in flames,” he warned. “We reject this systematic killing and demand an immediate halt to these unjustified military operations against innocent civilians, which only fuel further violence and instability.”

He called on all sides to respect the rule of law and religious principles that forbid the killing of innocents, stressing that justice should be served through legal and judicial means, rather than violence and revenge.

“We hold the guarantor states responsible for taking immediate and decisive action to end this tragedy without hesitation or double standards,” al-Hajri stated.

He also urged an end to the ongoing incitement campaigns that have continued since the fall of the ousted regime.
