DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – German authorities reported on Monday that two people were killed and several others sustained serious injuries after a car plowed into a crowd in the southwestern city of Mannheim.

Police confirmed the arrest of the suspect responsible for the ramming attack, which took place earlier in the day. Local reports indicate that the vehicle struck pedestrians gathered for an event, adding to concerns over security during public festivities.

According to the German newspaper Mannheimer Morgen, eyewitnesses saw a car accelerating into a group of people before coming to a stop. Authorities immediately responded, securing the area and detaining the driver.

A police spokesperson told NTV that a major security operation was underway in Mannheim following what was described as a “serious incident.” However, officials have yet to confirm details about the suspect or a possible motive.

The ramming incident occurred during ongoing carnival celebrations in several parts of Germany, including the Rhineland region. The timing has raised concerns about potential security threats at large public gatherings.

Authorities have yet to determine whether the incident was an accident, a criminal act, or a deliberate attack. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials urging the public to avoid speculation until more details emerge.

The incident has drawn attention amid heightened security concerns in Germany and across Europe, where past vehicle attacks have targeted crowded public spaces.
