Local factions in Syria’s Suwayda announce formation of Military Council

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Local factions in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, announced on Monday the formation of the Suwayda Military Council, comprising officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers, and armed members from the local community.

Tareq al-Shoufi, commander of the the Suwayda Military Council, told North Press that efforts to establish the council body began with the onset of the peaceful movement in Suwayda.

The initiative was led by a group of defected officers, revolutionaries, and retired military personnel aiming to coordinate military efforts in the region.

Al-Shoufi emphasized that the council is working in coordination with various local components to create a legal military entity with a new vision, distinct from the structure and reputation of the current Syrian army.

The council aims to establish a national army that ensures security, stability, and supports both political and economic solutions for the country.

Al-Shoufi stressed that this new Syrian army must be free from foreign influence and inclusive of all ethnic and national groups, rather than being dominated by a single faction.

Concluding his remarks, al-Shoufi warned against repeating the experience of factional divisions, emphasizing the need for a unified and structured military force.
