Turkey aims to occupy Kobani through attacks on Tishrin Dam – AANES
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) warned on Saturday that Turkey’s ongoing attacks on the Tishrin Dam in northern Syria are part of a broader effort to occupy the city of Kobani.
In a statement, the AANES in Kobani condemned Turkey’s targeting of infrastructure and essential services in northeastern Syria.
The statement added that by attempting to seize control of the strategic Tishrin Dam, which supplies the region with electricity and water, Turkey and its affiliated armed factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), aim to intimidate civilians, force their displacement, and alter the area’s demographics.
The AANES also warned that Turkey’s use of drones and warplanes to strike the dam poses a severe risk to its structural integrity. A collapse could trigger a chain reaction, leading to the failure of downstream dams and threatening millions of lives along the Euphrates River in Syria and Iraq. Additionally, such an event could result in an environmental and agricultural catastrophe, according to the statement.
The statement emphasized that Turkey’s attacks on the dam serve a broader goal of expanding its control east of the Euphrates River, particularly targeting Kobani—a city known internationally for its role in defeating the Islamic State (ISIS) and symbolizing the global fight against terrorism.
The AANES urged the U.S.-led Global Coalition, the international community, and human rights organizations to take immediate action to deter Turkish attacks, protect essential infrastructure, and safeguard the local population.
