French Foreign Minister Advocates for Kurdish Role in Syria’s Transition
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized on Wednesday the necessity of including Syrian Kurds in the country’s transitional phase, highlighting their pivotal role in defeating the Islamic State (ISIS).
In a press statement during his visit to Damascus, Barrot said, “The Kurds have been allies to Washington and Paris in the fight against ISIS. It is crucial they have a place in Syria’s upcoming transitional phase.”
Barrot’s comments echo his remarks from last Friday when he underscored the need for Kurdish participation in rebuilding a new Syria, labeling it a vital component of long-term peace and stability in the region.
Speaking to France Internationale, Barrot also addressed the impact of European Union sanctions on Syria. He acknowledged that while the sanctions aim to pressure the Syrian regime, they currently hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid and the country’s recovery. He hinted that these sanctions could be lifted soon, contingent on meeting specific conditions.
In a related statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the necessity of curbing the ongoing threat posed by ISIS, emphasizing continued vigilance in ensuring regional security.
Barrot concluded his address by expressing cautious optimism: “The hope for Syria is fragile but real.”
