Local militants clash with government forces in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Local militants in Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, launched on Monday an attack on Syrian government forces as they attempted to establish a new military post in the area.

According to a local faction source who spoke to North Press, over 30 soldiers and two officers arrived late Monday night in the “Sabaa Nisan” area of Daraa to set up the military post. However, the militants forced the government forces to retreat.

The source explained that the planned location for the military post is a key route frequently used by young men avoiding conscription and serves as a vital transportation hub for university students traveling along the Damascus-Daraa highway.

In response to the attack, the government forces have reinforced their positions across Daraa. Dozens of soldiers were deployed to the newly constructed court building and the education department headquarters—both of which have been fortified for the second time in recent days.

Additionally, the government forces erected dirt barricades around the national hospital, an area that houses multiple positions linked to the government-backed so-called “Popular Committees.”

This marks the second time in 48 hours that the government forces have bolstered their presence in Daraa. The reinforcements reflect fears of potential military escalations, coinciding with intensified developments in the governorates of Aleppo and Hama.
