Efforts underway to evacuate IDPs from northern Aleppo – Mazloum Abdi
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Commander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi said on Monday that efforts are underway to evacuate Afrin IDPs who are currently in the northern countryside of Aleppo to relocate them to safer areas in northeastern Syria.
In a post on X platform in Arabic, Abdi highlighted the rapid and unexpected escalation of events in northwestern Syria. He stated that SDF forces are facing intense attacks from multiple fronts.
On Sunday, Kurdish forces engaged in clashes with Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), in the town of Tel Rifaat. The SNA factions later claimed to have taken control of the town, severing the road linking Aleppo with its northern countryside.
This development has effectively besieged thousands of displaced individuals residing in five camps, as well as in numerous villages and towns in the north of Aleppo, locally known as Shahba region.
Abdi explained that with the collapse of the Syrian government forces and its allies, the SDF intervened to establish a humanitarian corridor between eastern Syria, Aleppo, and the Tel Rifaat area to protect the people from potential massacres.
He emphasized that the SDF is actively working to coordinate with all relevant parties in Syria to ensure the safety of displaced individuals. This includes facilitating their evacuation from Tel Rifaat and Shahba to northeastern Syria.
Meanwhile, the SDF forces continue to resist in order to safeguard families in Aleppo’s Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, Abdi added.
