Germany tries man for crimes in Syria while fighting with Hezbollah
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – German court started on Tuesday the trial of a Syrian man for war crimes and crimes against humanity while fighting for the Lebanese Hezbollah in support of the Syrian government.
AFP said that a 32-year-old Syrian man named Ammar A. is on trial in Stuttgart, Germany, on charges of killing and torturing.
Ammar A. is alleged to be a leader of a Shia Muslim militia that fought alongside Hezbollah to support the Syrian government forces during the Syrian war.
He faces accusations of attacking Sunni Muslims in the town of Busra al-Sham in southern Syria in 2012, which included participating in an assault on a civilian home that resulted in one death and the looting and burning of the property.
Additionally, he is charged with capturing and mistreating Sunni residents in Busra al-Sham during 2013 and 2014.
Prosecutors claim that in one case, the victims were turned over to Syrian military intelligence, where they were tortured.
Ammar A. was arrested in December 2023, and his trial is scheduled to take place until late February.
