Save the Children says children suffer most in Syrian conflict
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Save the Children said on Tuesday that children are paying the highest price as a result of the escalation of violence in Syria.
Rasha Muhrez, Response Director for Save the Children in Syria, warned about the severe risks to the children’s lives, their futures and their families amidst the ongoing conflict in the country in the wake of recent strikes across southern and central Syria.
“Children are paying the highest price for the ongoing conflict in Syria with the latest series of strikes across southern and central Syria – in which at least 24 people including civilians were reportedly killed,” she said.
Muhrez highlighted that “Recent attacks across Syria have killed and injured children, destroyed vital civilian infrastructure like electricity and water stations, schools and hospitals.”
“Whether it’s due to regional escalations, tensions across Syria’s northern border, or the ongoing conflict inside the country – children are suffering the most,” she noted.
The Response Director pointed out that the humanitarian situation in Syria is at unprecedented levels, with over 16 million people, nearly half of them children, requiring urgent assistance.
This represents the highest figure since the onset of the Syrian conflict as the ongoing violence exacerbates an already catastrophic crisis, she warned.
Muhrez called on all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
“The continued escalation of violence only deepens the crisis for Syria’s most vulnerable, who are already enduring unimaginable hardship. We call on all involved to prioritise the safety of civilians.”
