Turkish border guards kill child near Syria’s Kobani
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkish border guards killed on Saturday a child who was trying to cross the border into Turkey near the city of Kobani in northern Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the 14-year-old child was shot when he was returning to Kobani after he failed to cross illegally.
The killing occurred between the villages of Kikan and Sheran in the east of Kobnai.
He had been displaced from the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in the northwestern countryside of Hasakah after its occupation by Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), in 2019.
This incident has raised the total number of civilians killed by Turkish border guards since the beginning of 2024 to 13, with an additional 28 civilians, including a young girl, reported injured by gunfire during the same time, the SOHR said.
Synergy/Hevdesti Association, a victims’ advocacy group operating in Northeast Syria, said that during the first five months of 2024 the Turkish forces and the SNA factions arrested 114 asylum seekers who were subjected to torture and cruel treatment by the Turkish border guards.
