SDF media head says Syrian intelligence behind attacks in Deir ez-Zor

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Wednesday the General Intelligence Directorate of the Syrian government ordered the attacks against their forces in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

The head of SDF’s Media Center, Farhad Shami, said on his Facebook account that the attacks on the towns of Diban, Latwa, and Abu Hamam in the eastern bank of the Euphrates River were carried out upon orders from Hossam Luka, head of the General Intelligence Directorate.

On Tuesday night, militias affiliated with the Syrian government forces attacked areas held by the SDF.

The SDF said in a statement, “Syrian regime-backed mercenaries” and groups of the Iranian-backed National Defense Forces (NDF) launched a ground attack against areas on the eastern banks of the Euphrates River, east of Deir ez-Zor.

Shami added that SDF’s sweeping campaign continues against “the remnants of the Syrian regime-backed mercenaries.”

The attack failed to achieve its objectives due to SDF forces’ resistance and the vigilance of the people in Deir ez-Zor, who expelled the attackers from their homes, Shami noted.

The Tuesday’s attack resulted in the killing of two civilians and the injury of five others in the towns of Diban and Latwa, in addition to other civilian casualties in the town of Shuhail, east of Deir ez-Zor, according to the SDF.
