Child killed in war remnant blast in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A child was killed on Sunday in an explosion of a war remnant in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria.
A local source said Muhammad Abdurrahman,11, was killed, and Khalid al-Awad, 9, was injured in an explosion of a mortar shell in the village of al-Heri in the east of Deir ez-Zor.
The source added that the shell exploded after the two children placed it in a fire lit by their families to cook food near their home in the village of al-Heri.
The injured child was transferred to a hospital in the town of Abu Kamal for treatment. He is in a critical condition, according to the source.
On May 13, a landmine exploded in the village of Abu Hassan in the southeast of Deir ez-Zor injuring three children.
Syria has the highest number of landmine-related casualties globally, with thousands of people killed by landmines planted by different groups involved in the conflict in the country.
