Assyrians in Syria’s Hasakah celebrate festival of Nusradil
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of Assyrians in the town of Tel Tamr in the northwestern countryside of Hasakah, Northeast Syria, celebrated on Sunday the festival of Nusradil.
Pastor of the Saint Church in Tel Tamr, Baghos Ishaya, said the festival of Nusradil symbolizes the 12 disciples who received the gift of the Holy Spirit, and spread Christianity in all cities.
Nusardil is celebrated by Assyrians around the world, it is a unique celebration to Assyrians as it originates out of the lands that once comprised the early Sumerian, Akkadian and then Assyrian empires.
Wardya Brikha, an Assyrian woman from Tel Tamr, said, “We pray for peace and mercy and for the life to return as it was before.”
The prolonged Syrian crisis witnessed a large migration of Assyrians from their homes due to some pressures they faced, which affected social rituals and traditions, causing many festival rituals that were previously held to disappear.
Brikha told North Press, “We are sad today because many Assyrians have migrated abroad, taking with them many of the rituals they used to do.”
