Tribes of Syria’s Daraa form new group to combat narcotics
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A Tribal figure in Daraa Governorate in southern Syria announced on Thursday forming a new local group to combat trafficking of drugs and narcotics.
The tribal figure, who preferred not to be named for security reason, told North Press the group which goes by the name of “The Community Force” was established by the Daraa tribes council to combat drug dealers, traffickers, and users, as well as thieves.
Daraa is dealing with a growing drugs problem as residents observed an increase in the smuggling and trafficking of drugs, leading to a rise in crime and violence in the city.
This has resulted in public dissatisfaction, with people expressing frustration over the lack of government intervention to address and prevent this problem.
The group has not received supported so far. The members are selected by the city’s dignitaries for their reputable character and adherence to the law, the tribal figure pointed out.
He said the members serve voluntarily, without receiving any form of compensation or incentives.
The Community Force started its operation as soon as it was formed, he added.
On July 1, the group seized quantities of drugs in the house of an individual suspected of drug trafficking in Daraa.
