QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The 8th edition of the Ministerial Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” will take place in Brussels on Monday, May 27, the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations announced on Friday.
It said that the Ministerial meeting will see the participation of representatives from the EU Member States, Syria’s neighboring States, and third countries, as well as representatives from the United Nations, international organizations, and Syrian civil society.
The High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell will co-chair the conference on behalf of the European Union (EU), together with Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
The ministerial section of the Conference, preceded by the ‘Day of the Dialogue’ on 30 April, aims to mobilize vital financial support in order to address the most pressing needs of Syrians and their host communities.
It also aims to renew the international community’s support for a political solution in line with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.
Since 2017, the EU has been organizing an annual conference in Brussels to support the future of Syria. The conference aims to mobilize the international community in support of a comprehensive and credible political solution in Syria.
In a statement by the EU High Representative on the 13th anniversary of the beginning of the Syrian conflict, the EU said the Syrian conflict has resulted in the loss of over 400,000 lives and displacement of millions, with 6.6 million registered refugees abroad and another 6.8 million internally displaced within Syria, according to the statement.
