International NGO says 7.2 million Syrians displaced in 2023

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian conflict forced 7.2 million Syrians to leave their homes as of the end of 2023, a 6 percent increase from 2022, an international non-government organization said on Tuesday.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) said Syria continues to grapple with one of the world’s largest and most protracted internal displacement situations, with 7.2 million IDPs as of the end of 2023, a 6 percent increase from 2022.

In a report it published, the IDMC added that the number of displacements recorded during the year rose for the first time since 2019.

The report focused on northwestern Syria namely the governorates of Aleppo and Idlib that, according to the report, already hosted 52 percent of the country’s IDPs.

The IDMC report indicated that global conflict has forced more than 68 million people to leave their homes as of the end of 2023, marking the highest figure for 15 years.

Additionally, 7.7 million people have become homeless due to natural disasters, the report noted, pushing the total number of internally displaced people (IDPs) to a record 75.9 million.
