SDF meets tribal leaders in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor to discuss security

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday Commander in Chief, Mazloum Abdi, met with tribal leaders from Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, to discuss security issues and services in the area.

The SDF’s Media Center said Abdi along with members of the SDF’s General Command, Luqman Khalil and Rohlat Afrin, held a series of meetings with leaders of al-Uqaydat and al-Baggara tribes in Deir ez-Zor to discuss the role of tribes in fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS), as well as addressing the issue of local detainees.

Moreover, the attendants emphasized on speeding up the implementation of the outcomes of the “Enhancing Security and Stability towards Development and Consolidation of Cooperation in Deir ez-Zor” conference.

The conference was convened to fulfill promises made by the SDF to improve the conditions of Deir ez-Zor’s residents and address their demands following the security tensions that occurred in late August and early September of 2023.

The attendees called for the necessity of facing attempts to spread discord in the area, while the SDF General Command reaffirmed the validity of the previously announced amnesty for those involved in fighting against the SDF.

Tribal leaders requested to review the methods of raids and operations against ISIS cells, highlighting previous errors that have occurred, while emphasizing the need to eradicate the group’s sleeper cells.

Additionally, they discussed the issue of returnees from the Hawl Camp and the improvement of services, according to the SDF.

On April 18, the SDF and the U.S.-led Global Coalition met with the tribal leaders and dignitaries of Deir ez-Zor to discuss security threats posed by Turkey, ISIS, and the Syrian government that impacted Northeast Syria, with a specific emphasis on Deir ez-Zor.
