SDF, Global Coalition meet with tribal leaders in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the U.S.-led Global Coalition convened on Thursday a meeting with the tribal leaders and dignitaries of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, to discuss security issues.

The SDF Media Center said in a statement the attendees primarily discussed security threats impacting Northeast Syria by Turkey, the Islamic State (ISIS) and the Syrian government, with a specific emphasis on Deir ez-Zor.

The SDF statement pointed out that meetings and coordination with tribal leaders are crucial to establish long-term and short-term security, stability, and peace in the region and throughout Syria as they enhance “community cohesion” and lay a “stronger foundation for social peace.”

Luqman Khalil, a member of the SDF General Command, stressed the crucial role of coordination between the SDF and tribal leaders in ensuring security and civil peace.

The attending tribal sheikhs and dignitaries expressed their concerns about the threats posed by ISIS cells and militants affiliated with the Syrian government forces.

Representatives from the Global Coalition also reiterated their support for the SDF and expressed readiness to enhance the partnership and provide any necessary assistance in combating terrorist organizations and ensuring regional security and stability.

On Nov. 28, 2023, the command of SDF met with representatives of the Coalition and notables from the al-Uqaydat tribe in Deir ez-Zor to discuss attempts by the Syrian government and Iranian-backed militias to destabilize the region.

Additionally, the meeting dwelled on challenges related to the provision of services in the area.
