Syrian-Iraqi security officials discuss anti-narcotics issue
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – An Iraqi security delegation arrived on Wednesday in the Syrian capital of Damascus to discuss anti-narcotics issue, the semi-official al-Watan newspaper reported.
The newspaper said in a post on Facebook, citing charge d’Affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Damascus, Yassin Sharif al-Hejemi, that the Iraqi delegation would be headed by director general of anti-narcotics department of Iraq’s Ministry of Interior, Ahmad al-Zarkani.
The delegation will hold discussions with Anti-Narcotics Department of the Public Security Directorate in Syria, according to the newspaper.
The delegation will meet Mohammad al-Rahmoun, Syria’s Minister of Interior, to set plans and studies to deepen high-level security collaboration between the two countries and to eliminate drug trafficking, the newspaper added.
On Feb. 24, Iraq’s Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari announced the formation of a joint liaison cell with Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon to save time and follow up on international drug trafficking gangs.
On Feb. 17, the interior ministers of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq held talks in Amman and agreed to set up a joint telecommunications cell to exchange information regarding the process of combating drug trafficking.
