Israel, U.S. call on UNSC to condemn Iran’s attack

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. and Israel called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Sunday to hold Iran accountable for its recent attack on Israel.

During a UNSC meeting which was called after Iran’s attack, Robert Wood, Deputy U.S. ambassador to the U.N., called on the member states to condemn Iran’s attack.

Early on April 14, Iran launched more than 100 drones and missiles toward Israel, which its air defense systems and U.S. and UK forces shot down over Syria, Iraq, and Jordan and deterred almost all of the attacks before crossing into Israeli territory.

Iran’s attack, which it claimed was an act of self-defense, came in response to an attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 1, which killed five officers and two generals of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon.

Wood said the U.S. will “explore additional measures to hold Iran accountable” at the U.N.

In addition, Israel’s ambassador to the U.N., Gilad Erdan, called on the UNSC to condemn Iran for the attack and designate the IRGC as a terrorist group.

He added that Iran had violated international law and should pay a heavy price for its “horrible crimes.”

For his part, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Iran’s attack and warned the member states not to further escalate tensions with reprisals against Iran.

Iran’s ambassador to the U.N., Amir Saeid Iravani, said his country does not seek an escalation but the action that it had taken was necessary and proportionate since it has the right to defend itself.

He reiterated that Tehran will always use its legitimate right to defend itself and “respond proportionately.”
