UNHCR report shows 90 percent of people in Syria live in poverty
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday in a report that 90 percent of the population in Syria lives in poverty. The report shows the effects of the 13-year long crisis on the population.
UNHCR’s report pointed out 12.9 million are food insecure, and 6.8 million are internally displaced.
Additionally, 16.7 million people need humanitarian assistance, which is a nine per cent increase compared to the previous year, according to the report.
The report highlighted that the Feb.6 earthquake worsened the already deteriorating situation more and “killed some 6,000 people, and left nearly 13,000 injured,” adding, “Many are in deep poverty and desperation, with 230,000 still displaced and vulnerable.”
Moreover, it brought to light that 16.7 million people need humanitarian assistance, 6.8 million people are internally displaced, two million people live in informal settlements and camps, and over 17,000 refugees and asylum seekers registered with UNHCR.
