Iranian-backed militias evacuate posts in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Iranian-backed militias evacuated posts in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, following recent U.S. airstrikes in response for the killing of American troops in Jordan.
A security source told North Press on Tuesday that the Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun militia, which mainly consists of Afghan Shiite militants, evacuated its post on the Panorama Street in the city of Deir ez-Zor.
On Feb. 2, U.S. forces targeted facilities of Iran-backed groups in Syria and Iraq in response to a drone attack conducted on Jan. 28, targeting a U.S. base in northeast Jordan. The attack resulted in the killing of three American soldiers and in the injury of 40 others.
Additionally, a joint post of the Regiment 47 and Liwa Fatemiyoun in the Katf neighborhood in the town of Abu Kamal in the east of Deir ez-zor was also evacuated.
Another joint post of Regiment 47 and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the al-Jam’iyat neighborhood in Abu Kamal was also evacuated.
In this particular post, Regiment 47 was led by Abu Issa al-Mashhadani, meanwhile the Iranian Haj Abbas led the IRGC in Abu Kamal.
Moreover, Iranian-backed militias and affiliated groups were deployed in new positions, most notably in a joint compound of Regiment 47 and Kata’ib Hezbollah near al-Rahman Mosque in the Katf neighborhood, where al-Mshhadani had sole command.
The militias were also deployed in the al-Tamirat base, also known as al-Rahba base, in the center of Abu Kamal in addition to other Regiment 47 camps in the Abu Kamal desert and the town of Sayyal, and deep in the Syrian Desert towards the village of Kabajib and the town of al-Sukhnah, Palmyra city in the countryside of Homs, central Syria.
In the city of Deir ez-Zor, the militias were deployed in houses of civilians in the al-Ommal and Rasafa neighborhoods and the Jaffra village and Harabesh town adjacent to the city.
