Iran’s ambassador to Syria denies withdrawing IRGC officers from country
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iran’s ambassador to Syria Hossein Akbari denied reports about pulling out senior officers in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from Syria.
Akbari told semi-official Al-Watan Newspaper that Iran is legally present in Syria according to international laws, with full coordination with the Syrian government, and will not withdraw from the country.
He stressed there was no truth to news about Iran’s reported fears of leaked information from within Syrian authorities that contribute to Israeli strikes and the assassination of Iranian officers.
On Feb.1, Reuters reported citing sources that the IRGC reduced the deployment of its senior officers in Syria due to the recent intense airstrikes by Israel.
One of the sources told Reuters that senior Iranian commanders had left Syria along with dozens of mid-ranking officers, describing it as a downsizing of the presence.
Akbari pointed out that based on information technology that has greatly developed, there is no need for the involvement of humans to take information.
