Iran’s IRGC claims responsibility for attack in Erbil
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility early on Tuesday for strikes that hit a residential area near Erbil in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq (KRI), resulting in casualties.
The IRGC claimed attacking an Israeli espionage headquarters in KRI, stating, “Ballistic missiles were used to destroy espionage centers and gatherings of anti-Iranian terrorist groups in the region,” late on Monday.
Kurdistan Security Council condemned the attack and denied the allegations, saying it is a violation of the sovereignty of KRI and Iraq.
The attacks on the targeted area, which is located 40 kilometers northeast of Erbil in a neighborhood near the US consulate, resulted in the killing of at least four civilians and the injury of six.
Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department condemned the attacks, adding that they undermine Iraq’s stability.
The IRGC also said they carried out attacks in Syria against those responsible for “terrorist operations” in Iran and the Islamic State (ISIS).
Since the Israeli-Hamas broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, Iranian-backed militias have attacked U.S. military bases in Syria and Iraq regularly. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iranian-backed militias, has claimed responsibility for almost daily attacks on U.S. troops and bases.
On Jan. 14, the Islamic Resistance attacked with a barrage of rockets the Global Coalition’s base in the Conoco gas field in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
