U.S. forces foil attack on its bases in western Iraq
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Sources from the Iraqi army said on Tuesday that the U.S. carried out an airstrike that foiled an attack on the Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq, where forces of the U.S.-led Global Coalition are stationed.
Sky News reported citing Iraqi military sources that a U.S. airstrike destroyed a rocket launcher mounted on a truck parked in a rural area, seven km east of the base. The sources added that the launcher was loaded with at least two rockets aimed at the U.S. base.
Since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, Coalition and U.S. bases in Syria and Iraq have been targeted almost daily, with the number of attacks exceeding 115, according to U.S. officials. Most of these attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed militias in both countries.
The military sources added that the airstrike destroyed the rocket launcher before managing to fire on the Ain al-Asad airbase.
