Iranian, Turkish diplomats discuss issues related to Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iran’s Foreign Minister’s Senior Advisor for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz held on Wednesday a meeting, discussing the latest political and international issues related to Syria.

The diplomats discussed potential future meetings between Iranian, Turkish, Russian, and Syrian authorities under the so-called Astana format, emphasizing the importance of establishing permanent peace in Syria, according to MEHR News Agency.

A meeting of the defense ministers and intelligence leaders of Turkey, Russia, and Syria was held in Moscow on Dec. 28, 2022. The meeting was followed by a series of meetings at ministerial levels, including defense and foreign ministers.

But the latest in this path, whose activities declined after the Turkish elections last May, was a statement by the Turkish Defense Minister, Yaşar Güler, in which he pledged to end his country’s military presence in Syria as soon as security was restored in the “neighboring country,” indicating that the Turkish forces would return home as soon as the Syrian government and the opposition agree on a new constitution and hold elections to ensure stability.

Additionally, Khaji and Yildiz talked about the Israeli onslaught of the Palestinians in Gaza and what impacts it could have on a potential wider conflict in the West Asia region.
