Israel starts pumping seawater into Gaza tunnels – WSJ
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Israel has started to pump water from the Red Sea into Hamas’ extensive tunnel network in Gaza, said the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, citing U.S. officials briefed on Israel’s military operations.
The move aims to flood the tunnels which pose a significant challenge for the Israeli military in their operation in Gaza and serve as Hamas’ hub for planning and executing operations.
A spokesperson for the Israeli defense minister declined to a WSJ’s request to comment on the matter, saying the tunnel operations are classified.
The flooding, which has begun last month, sparked concerns among some Biden administration officials who said that utilizing “seawater might not be effective and could endanger Gaza’s freshwater supply.”
