AANES starts measures to provide Syria’s Raqqa with electricity
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Raqqa Civil Council, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), announced on Sunday a tender to supply electrical materials after signing a memorandum of understanding with U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide the city of Raqqa, north Syria, with electricity.
Recently, the Raqqa Civil Council signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the electric power sector with the USAID.
The tender includes supplying electrical materials for the Energy Committee affiliated with the AANES to rehabilitate ten centers in Raqqa.
The center of Raqqa suffers from the lack of national grid electricity in all neighborhoods due to the infrastructure damage caused by battles to expel the Islamic State (ISIS) militants.
Hamid al-Lawash, Co-chairman of the Energy Committee, mentioned that the electrification rate to the city’s neighborhoods does not exceed 70 percent.
He added that the obstacles to electrification and power network extension are the high costs of materials used in the rehabilitation of infrastructure, in addition to budget constraints.
He noted that the limited hours of power supply, due to the reduced electricity generation from dams caused by the low level of the Euphrates River, play a significant role in not providing the electrical power to the city’s neighborhoods, as the current capacity of power does not cover all the centers operating currently.
